Academic writing has its own ground rules and its own creativity. In this practical guide for students and scholars, the author takes the reader step-by-step through the entire writing and publication process-from choosing a subject, developing content that will engage others, to submitting the final manuscript for publication. The underlying premise of the book is that scholarship depends on interaction with other scholars and that following the rules of good conversation (when writing) results in a greater likelihood of successful publication. Anne Sigismund Huff shows scholars how to improve their skills by selecting the right written works to examine and how to focus the questions asked and influence the way they are answered. This book is filled with exercises, helpful checklists, exemplars, and advice drawn from personal (sometimes painful) experience. A number of useful appendixes, include alternative view from Mary Jo Hatch, a conversation on writing in English by non-native speakers, a "reviewing checklist" to assess the overall quality of a scholarly paper or manuscript, a summary of all the writing exercises, an advice summary, and an annotated bibliography.
"This book provides invaluable information and advice on the mysteries of publishing. . . . The ideas and advice in the book are easily accessible. At every stage Anne shares with readers the ups and downs of something that is now critical to every academic career. The book is a must for every Ph.D. student, supervisor and anyone interested into print."
-- Linda McKie * BSA Network *The Book is valuable for Ph.D Students and post-docs in Germany, as many professors come from the "old" publishing system where they did not have to publish internationally. Nowadays everybody has to go international when it comes to journal choice, therefore we found the Ann Huff Books very fitting for our teaching needs as they make a lot of implicit knowledge from the reasearch community explicit. -- Dr Thilo Pukall * drupal *
More for postgrad/ research students -- Miss Amber Heaviside * drupal *
The book gives useful advice on how to write a paper that is interesting to read. It provides reflection exercises that further support the writing process. I would absolutely recommend it to students writing a Master’s thesis, even though they are not planning to publish it because it could help them improve their line of reasoning. -- Ms Caroline Wozny * drupal *
Excellent textbook to support both thesis and paper writing. -- Professor Damian Mooney * drup
