This book offers a comprehensive guide to psychodynamic brief therapy, exploring essential techniques and practices for effective therapeutic interventions.
In A Psychodynamic Approach to Brief Therapy, readers are presented with a thorough exploration of psychodynamic brief counselling and psychotherapy, enhanced by illustrative clinical vignettes. This comprehensive guide serves as an ideal resource for those seeking a practical introduction to the field. It covers essential concepts and techniques, making it accessible for both novice and experienced practitioners alike.
The book begins with a historical overview of psychoanalytic theory, tracing its roots and development. It then delves into various psychodynamic models of brief, short-term, and time-limited therapy, highlighting their unique characteristics and similarities in terms of duration, techniques, and the specific contexts in which they were developed. Gertrud Mander, the author, provides valuable insights into the fundamentals of brief therapeutic practice through a psychodynamic lens.
Mander emphasizes the active role of the brief therapist, focusing on critical aspects such as assessment, contracting, structuring, and the importance of both beginnings and endings in the therapeutic process. The book also underscores the significance of supervision and training, making it a vital resource for professionals aiming to refine their practice in brief therapy. Overall, A Psychodynamic Approach to Brief Therapy is a well-rounded guide that balances theory and practical application, making it a must-read for those in the field of psychotherapy.
Although this is a useful text regarding a brief approach to this orientation of feedback there are at times an outdated style of writing with an out of date cultural perspective. E.g. on page 39 it is stated, "The focus must be quite concrete and specific to each patient, not general like "homosexuality" or "oedipal conflict..." . This statement is outdated and not fitting with current governing bodies and guidelines set by the BPS and HCPC, which do not support the use of reparative therapy. -- James Porter * drupal *
A very good primer for those seeking to learn more about psychodynamic techniques in coaching, however not suitable for my specific course. -- Mr Antonio Pangallo * drupal *
This is a very thorough text in that it discusses the context of it′s subject very literally, but in terms of what is required for the course here, it is too specific -- Mr Armin Luthi * drupal *
This is a real useful book for trainees wishing to learn more about the practice of short term therapy as well as practitioners wanting to improve their practice in short term therapy. It provides good descriptions of time-limited models including techniques for working in brief therapy and emphasis of the importance of endings in brief work. -- Mrs Ana Paula Wellbrook * drupal *
