Doing Research with Children cover

This Third Edition of Doing Research with Children is practical introduction to the process of designing, doing and writing up research with children and young people. At the centre is a commitment to engaging with children and young people as active research participants rather than as passive subjects. In the new edition, you′ll find up to date information on the fast-changing political and ethical debates around research with children and young people as well as guidance on how to carry out research yourself.

Divided into three sections, the new edition covers:

-the main theories and approaches of research with children and young people

-expanded guidance on research ethics

-techniques for conducting both qualitative and quantitative research

-more on analysing your research

-a brand new chapter on communicating your research findings.

This is a must-have guide for students and practitioners who are engaging in research with children and young people.

′This is a much needed, important and thorough book on doing research with (rather than to) children. Such research requires very careful consideration, thinking and planning - all of which will be helped directly by this book.

The authors bring together different professional perspectives, and offer very practical help and guidance, with clear examples. Built upon evidence, theory and most importantly, direct experience, this updated book will be of value to anyone thinking about research with children, and particularly those carrying out such research projects for the first time′ -
Irvine S. Gersch
Professor in Educational and Child Psychology, University of East London

′The authors are well qualified to set out the political and ethical issues regarding research with children and young people, arguing that it is a process done ′with′ and not done ′to′ them. This book is value for money, being useful for educational research up to Level 7 (Master’s Degree) across all educational sectors, early years to Further and Higher Education′ -- Nick Morgan-Baker
Great for anyone who is starting out in doing research with children. Key attractions: clearly presents perinent issues that the novice researcher needs to consider when carrying out research; aims of each chapter provided; great to have references at the end of each chapter; and very accessible, as so easy to read, and this is helped by the fact that the book is well laid out with good signposting making finding what you want easy. For those in the academic arena this is a great book to reccommend to your under-graduate students and good revision for those at post-graduate level. -- Dr Carol Moxam * drupal *
This is a superb textbook! What I really love about it is that it is grounded in an understanding of educational psychology theories and the role of philosophical assumptions in research (which few books and courses emphasise enough). Also great to have information about all the stages of designing a child-oriented research project, with concrete examples, as well as great advice on ethics and dissemination. A clear, accessible and highly-informative text authored by experienced practitioners with strong empathy for the children. Highly recommended! -- Dr Florentina Taylor * drupal *
An essential guide for anyone considering doing research with children and young people. It is easy to overlook some important methodological and ethical issues when considering research with children and young people and this book provides very useful guide in how to overcome these pitfalls. I will be adding this text to my reading list for the undergraduate research module. I will also be recommending the book to Masters students whose dissertations focus on research with this group of potential participants. -- Dr Jean Clarke * drupal *
The book contains a chapter on ethics which is essential reading prior to writing the research proposal. There are clear explanations of reliability and validity including triangulation. Probability and significance is explained simply and is useful for students on dyslexia courses for understanding research papers, even if a quantitative approach is not being used in their own study. Excellent explanation of how to use quantitative measures in a single-case design which will provide helpful guidance for those wanting to measure the effect of an intervention. Four approaches to qualitative research are also given with examples of first stage coding of data using a transcript. Students would benefit from examples of how this was then further analysed to bring together the themes into a more manageable number. -- Dr Kath Kelly * drupal *
This book is essential for anyone contemplating or engaged in research with children, covering every aspect of the research process in an accessible, readable and engaging yet appropriately challenging way. There is an important word in the book′s title that sums up the prevailing ethos of the book: ′with′. This book really is for ′doing research with children′. -- Dr Phil Stringer * drupal *
Very well written, useful material. Good balance between theoretical and practical. Many elements not covered in as much detail elsewhere. -- Dr Richard Greenwood * drupal *
Very good addition to the research books recommended. Focus on research with children welcome. -- Dr Ros Garrick * drupal *
This book is extremely useful for everyone who is learning how to do research. I particularly like the structure, as it is paralell to the structure of a research paper - this, I think, will be very helpfull for students.
Definetely essential. -- Dr Susana Castro * drupal *
an excellent text that makes very good use of illustrations, tables and summaries of learning, the lattter guide the student to reflect upon their own understanding and knowledge of the points raised. A text that I would recommend for all child health practitioners undertaking research with children and /or young people. -- Eileen Wake * drupal *
Very useful for our Children and Young People dissertation students who are conducting primary research. -- Miss Holly Joanna Magenta Scott * drupal *
Very useful for students to be aware of how to research with children in an inclusive and safe way. -- Miss Joanna Sharpen * drupal *
This is an easy to read text for anyone wanting to understand the basic principles of the research process and how this applies to children. There are plenty of contextual examples that are described in stages to aid understanding and support learning. I highly recommend this research text the student and qualified children’s nurses. -- Miss Katie White * drupal *
Useful book for undergraduate early years students -- Miss Lorna Wardle * drupal *
This book is written in an engaging way and provides the reader with different professional perspectives brought together. It also gives very practical help and clear examples. Anyone thinking of conducting research with children will find it valuable. -- Miss Magdalena Marczak * drupal *
This is a good resource with a comprehensive introduction and step by step guide for those thinking about about conducting research with children.

The author has included a range of examples and templates to assist new researchers. -- Miss Syreeta Charles-Cole * drupal *
Helpful review for ITE students using reflective practice and research techniques. -- Mr Neil Rutledge * drupal *
Greig′s text does indeed provide a practical guide for my students and does so via a format which is comprehensive but not overwhelming and the students appear to appreciate a text that relates directly to their vocational areas, as, in the not too distant past, it was very difficult to find such a tome, instead having ′adapt′ research ′guides′ aimed at health and social work and general social science markets. It also appears accessible to students undetaking practitioner-based research for the first time and when used alongside Mukherji and Albon′s ′Research Methods in Early Childhood′, provides my cohorts with sufficient detail to plan, execute and write-up module-level, under graduate projects.
College staff here will strongly advocate the adoption of this book as a key text at the next University module reading list up-date opportunity. -- Mr Philip Marshall * drupal *
This is a very good text. Of particular interest is the focus on Participatory approaches in research. If you are stuck for ideas on how and why to carryout research with children then you should invest in this text. -- Mr Sean Creaney * drupal *
This book is easy to access and is useful on the ′Researching Children′ module and Independent study (dissertation). Well written with recent literature and new ideas embedded. -- Mrs Claire Pescott * drupal *
This is an excellent book for any researcher who will be planning to work with children. It is clear, readable and easy to understand and highlights the necessary challenges, ethics, consent, vulnerability etc which all must be considered prior to embarking on research with children. very valuable resource. -- Mrs Helena Dunbar * drupal *
I have recommended this book to level 5 Early Years students who are embarking on research for the first time. It explains the different methods for qualitative and quantitative research, how to analyse data, explores ethics and why theory is important in an early years research project. -- Mrs Jaqueline Braithwaite * drupal *
Whilst this is a useful book it doesn′t serve the purpose of the module I was intending it for. -- Mrs Marie Dey * drupal *
This is a well written book that examines the issues when researching with children. -- Mrs Svetlana Shivacheva * drupal *
An easily read and understood text book, yet it includes enough detail to make a real contribution to assisting students with doing research with children. -- Ms Denise Elliott * drupal *
A very good book for research methods studies in Childhood studies. There are very few books available. -- Ms Kathleen Rooney * drupal *
