"I wish the Handbook of Ethnography had been available to me as a fledgling ethnographer. I would recommend it for any graduate student who contemplates a career in the field. Likewise for experienced ethnographers who would like the equivalent of a world atlas to help pinpoint their own locations in the field."
- Journal of Contemporary Ethnography
"No self-respecting qualitative researcher should be without Paul Atkinson′s handbook on ethnography. This really is encyclopaedic in concept and scope. Many "big names" in the field have contributed so this has to be the starting point for anyone looking to understand the field in substantive topic, theoretical tradition and methodology."

Ethnography is one of the chief research methods in sociology, anthropology and other cognate disciplines in the social sciences. This Handbook provides an unparalleled, critical guide to its principles and practice.
The volume is organized into three sections. The first systematically locates ethnography firmly in its relevant historical and intellectual contexts. The roots of ethnography are pinpointed and the pattern of its development is demonstrated.
The second section examines the contribution of ethnography to major fields of substantive research. The impact and strengths and weaknesses of ethnographic method are dealt with authoritatively and accessibly.
The third section moves on to examine key debates and issues in ethnography, from the conduct of research through to contemporary arguments.
The result is a landmark work in the field, which draws on the expertise of an internationally renowned group of interdisicplinary scholars. The Handbook of Ethnography provides readers with a one-stop critical guide to the past, present and future of ethnography. It will quickly establish itself as the ethnographer′s bible.
This is a very detailed and excellent resource for anyone thinking of working in an ethnographic way. The referencing is extensive with clearly divided chapters on all aspects of ethnography. The content is of interest from a historical, methodological and practical perspective and approaches the topic in a broad and open way: a textbook that should be available in every library. -- Dr Alaster Douglas * drupal *
While developing interest among students to research into the practicalities of church and their localities, ethnographic matters are essential to understand. This books sets out and accomplishes a lot of the ground world for what a handbook on ethnography needs to be. It is perhaps a little beyond my BA students and may phase them but it should help those who persist in reading sections of it at least as a reference. The typeset is a little too close and dense for comfort of skim reading! Perhaps it is better for the PhD students! -- Dr Anne Dyer * drupal *
This edited collection is packed with chapters by leading authors and it explores a wide range of ethnographic approaches. It is an excellent resource for students; and for lectures and researchers in the field of social sciences; which I would highly recommend -- Dr Dawn Mannay * drupal *
This is an outstanding collection that offers a complete practical overview of issues in doing ethnography. It is also an interdisciplinary text that thinks ethnography out of disciplinary bounds, yet through raising context-specific problems. -- Dr Elena Gonzalez-Polledo * drupal *
The ′Handbook...′ provides excellent coverage of important topics relating to ethnographic research. The contributors include a number of well-respected criminologists and social deviance researchers so this is an excellent resource for students undertaking intermediate level criminological research training. -- Dr Jarrett Blaustein * drupal *
This is a very welcome book as its content and style offer support for the individual to refelctivley engage in the reflective use of an ethnography. -- Dr Jen Leamon * drupal *
A fantastic text which will provide invaluable for students -- Dr Matthew Brannan * drupal *
This is an excellent book for the student and practitioner to dip into for specialist comment and opinion. It is a comprehensive reference. If there was one minor deficiency it is that the text is somewhat overly dense making it difficult to read, particularly on the move. Some students that I passed it to for comment suggested that the lack of illustrations and colour were off putting. They pointed to Social Research Methods, Bryman,2010, OUP as an easier format. However it is a serious text and is recommended as a reference that should always be in reach -- Dr Michael Anderson * drupal *
This is an excellent idea to put under one cover so many useful research tips, references and the ′search terms′. I like the relevance of the coverage to the inter- and cross- disciplinary research. -- Dr Olga Kuznetsova * drupal *
This is a great treatment of ethnography for students and anyone just getting into the field, or exploring new themes in their research practice. -- Dr Sarah Amsler * drupal *
A very detailed, in-depth text for anyone wanting to know more about ethnography. -- Miss Alyson Lewis * drupal *
This is an excellent book. I would definitely recommend to anyone who is reading at post-graduate level as is it very in-depth and theoretical. -- Miss Amy Clark * drupal *
This handbook is an excellent addition to students working at M Level on school based ethnographic type research projects. The areas in particular that could be related to education were most useful, such as the chapters on ethnographic research in educational settings, ethics, phenomenology, making field notes and narrative. It is also useful for students to see how wide the range of methodological approaches that can be adopted within an ethnographic study. A great reference point for post-graduate students looking to carry out field work in schools. -- Mr Alan Thomson * drupal *
Comprehensive and an excellent source for final year undergraduate and postgraduate students -- Mr Iain Jones * drupal *
The Handbook is a solid addition to any collection for students of ethnography. The broad range of articles address many of the key themes, histories and applications of ethnographic practice and highlight why it has remained an enduring tool for qualitative research. -- Mr John Aitken * drupal *
Good introduction into Ethnography. Interesting to use with netnography. -- Mr Matthew Hirst * drupal *
Ethnography is becomming a popluar research activity for Busniess managment students. This text is really useful for students who are also employed by the organisations under investigation. There is an excellent blend of theory and practical application, allowing students to fully partcipate in the research process.
Atkinson has a gift of artculating a difficult concept with ease. -- Mr Michael Hall * drupal *
This is still THE must read book on ethnography, outlining the principles of this research approach like no other! -- Mr Michael Waltinger * drupal *
A comprehensive and well considered Handbook that captures the essence of ethnographic research. Certainly a must- have in every library. -- Mr Patrick Muigai * drupal *
This is an excellent book. I particularly enjoyed reading the chapter on ′Grounded theory in Ethnography′. Highly recommended! -- Mr Sean Creaney * drupal *
Some chapters are excellent (Rock; Charmaz and Emerson). Lack of a realist perspective on Ethnology. -- Mr Steven Martin * drupal *
A good collection of readings from key practitioners in their filds. As it has quite disparate chapters on specific topics it is well suited for use of specific chapters in specific areas and a great resource. It introduces breadth but is not an applied book, rather an excellent resource and reference with some classic chapters for specific applications. -- Mr Steven Wright * drupal *
An excellent book on ethnographical methods, theory and research. Provides an in-depth exploration of a large range of ethnographical approaches and key themes and is highly recommended to students at all levels who wish to gain an invaluable introduction to Ethnography. Definitely a classic textbook in Ethnography! -- Mrs Anne Sidenius * drupal *
Excellent resource -- Mrs Julie Green * drupal *
This is an in-depth guide to ethnographic research which includes the underpinning epistemologies and a range of creative research methodologies that incorporate grounded theory and other methods within an ethnographic framework. Examples used are broad ranging and transdisciplinary. One constructive comment: The text is quite small and this may make it less of an attractive option for students with sight problems - is an electronic or larger text version available? -- Mrs Laura Middleton-Green * drupal *
A good recommendation for students novice to ethnography. Clearly presented and well structured -- Mrs Nadia Dossa * drupal *
A comprehensive handbook that provides insight into ethnographical methods, theory and research. Provides an in-depth exploration of a large range of ethnographical approaches and key themes ideal for the first time and even the experienced researcher. -- Mrs Sharon Colilles * drupal *
The range of topics and issues covered in the edited chapters makes this an excellent text book to recommend for students. The fact that it covers both theoretical, methological and practice focused issues makes it especially helpful. -- Ms ANDREA LYONS * drupal *
Excellent book for all health professions and for all levels of research students. easy to read and understand -- Ms Sheila Stott * drupal *
One of the classic textbooks in Ethnography. I would not know how to teach this subject without this volume. -- Professor Joerg Struebing * drupal *
This book provides excellent background to an ethnography course, -- Professor Paul Hackett * drupal *
Excellent book, although it reads too much as a dictionary, which is both its quality and its default for class use. I could only recommend it, and instead I had them buy a book in a less-dry format.
Nevertheless, the Handbook is part of my bibliography, and I told students that those of them continuing on a PhD curriculum needed to have it on their shelves. -- Professor Sebastien Chauvin * drupal *
