The Lyrics in African American Popular Music - Le texte dans la musique populaire afro-américaine

The first international conference specifically devoted to the lyrics in African American popular music was held in Metz in September 2000 and gathered scholars and experts on blues, gospel song and rap. The eleven contributions, three of which in French, contained in this volume turn their attention to structure and thematic and expressive content in the three genres. Their conclusions, more than ever, allow us to see black popular music as the ongoing oral history of African Americans.
Tenu à Metz en septembre 2000, le premier colloque international consacré spécifiquement au texte dans la musique populaire afro-américaine a réuni chercheurs universitaires et experts autour du blues, du gospel et du rap. Les onze communications, dont huit en anglais, qui constituent cet ouvrage se penchent plus particulièrement sur la structure et le contenu thématique et expressif de ces trois genres musicaux. Leurs conclusions amènent plus que jamais le lecteur à percevoir la musique populaire afro-américaine comme l’histoire orale du peuple noir aux Etats-Unis.
